General Backup Information about DNS
- DNS is usually paired with Active Directory to make an Active Directory Integrated DNS, but occasionally it is not, Microsoft points to the zone files as the important files for backup in DNS. There are some helpers for locating those files below.
- Backing up Active Directory by the VSS backup set should also get any integrated zone files, but we recommend going through the file system to select those files just to be certain.
- You’ll need to select the files manually if DNS is not Integrated with Active Directory.
- Backing up the registry is necessary for backing up DNS in any circumstance.
