Using the built-in backup and restore feature in BCM is the only supported backup/restore method by Microsoft, so this routine should be followed:

  1. On the Business Contact Manager menu, go to Database Tools, and then click Manage Database.
  2. In the Manage Database dialog box, on the Back up/Restore tab, click Back up Database.
  3. In the Database Back Up dialog box, in the Back up Business Contact Manager to box, type the location for your backup file, or click Browse to select a location such as a CD drive or memory stick.
  4. To password-protect the backup file, type a password in both the Password and Verify Password boxes.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Set Mozy to backup the files in this directory.
  7. Also have Mozy backup the .ldf and .mdf files under the Business Contact Manager hidden directory on your system. You might have to enable viewing them first.

For Server 2003, the directory is: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\

For Server 2008, Vista, or 7, the directory is: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Business Contact Manager\

If you need to restore the backup, use the same Manage Database menu. Restoring from these files is only for use in case of emergency.

Note: Only the person who created the database can back up its files.
